The Beacon House Association of San Pedro

The Beacon House helps men to recover from alcoholism and addiction. We help men find a new life in sobriety and service to the community.

Why do we exist?

We exist because there is a need for our services. We provide residential treatment for men who are seeking recovery from the diseases of alcoholism and addiction. There are many treatment programs but we are unique because we fill a particular niche in the continuum of care for those men who need more than a short term period in a program. Our clients need a home and a family and direction until they can develop a system of support and the ability to make decisions that will benefit them and their community. We do more than teach men how to stay clean and sober; we teach them how to live. People care about Beacon House because most people are personally aware of the devastation caused by alcoholism and addiction. It is estimated that one our of ten people are alcoholics. Each alcoholic directly affects the lives of at least seven other people. Treatment saves lives, money, families and communities. We all should care.

What have you accomplished?

We have been in existence since our founding in 1970. We were incorporated as a non-profit in 1974. Since that time we have seen over 4000 men come through our doors. We started as a small single building facility of 16 beds. Today we have six residential buildings and house over 109 men at any one time. Our program is comprehensive and follows the best practices established by the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Our long term program and an array of support services aimed at helping the men get back on their feet has proven to be a winning combination in effectiveness and efficiency. Beacon House has been in the forefront of treatment from the very start. We pioneered the Social Model of recovery treatment. This model relies on experience in recovery and the concept of one alcoholic helping another. This provides for low cost and effective utilization of resources. We were pioneers in acceptance of people with HIV/AIDs by developing a policy on non-discrimination way back in 1984. Beacon House has also been a pioneer and one of the original members of the Substance Abusing Mentally Ill Project. This groups purpose was to develop a treatment model for people with co-occuring mental illness and substance abuse.

How do you help people in my community? Why do you need my support?
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it? Can I Volunteer? How?
