Wycliffe Bible Translators

Without Scripture or literacy, life may seem hopeless for millions of people. By supporting Wycliffe, you help bring hope to many of these language communities through translation, education and literacy.

Why do we exist?

More than 2,200 people groups do not have any Scripture in their own language. To meet this need, Wycliffe has adopted Vision 2025, an initiative to see a Bible translation program in progress in every language still needing one by 2025.

But Wycliffe's vision doesn't stop with translation. It has been said, "translation provides the book for the readers, but literacy provides the readers for the book."

Wycliffe programs promote mother-tongue literacy, and also teach basic math skills. Students are thrilled when they learn to read in their own language! Literacy opens the door to a realm of new and exciting possibilities.

What have you accomplished?

• Wycliffe and our partner organizations have already completed more than 700 Scripture translations; over 78 million people can now find peace and love through God's Word.
• Our literacy campaigns have taught thousands to read and write in their own language. Wycliffe has trained local teachers who eagerly promote literacy among their own people.
• Working with indigenous speakers, Wycliffe has helped develop the first alphabet and first system of writing for many languages. Language development produces dictionaries, textbooks and traditional stories that preserve a culture's heritage.
• Wycliffe has translated life-saving health information into minority languages. These materials teach people how to protect themselves from deadly illnesses such as AIDS, malaria and avian flu.
• We empower and train indigenous leaders to do translation and literacy work. Gaspard, a translator from the Democratic Republic of Congo, writes:

         Translating the gospel of Mark has given me a great deal of joy, and I really feel the need now to translate the whole Bible into my mother tongue. I realized just how much the powerful words of the Bible became relevant to my daily concerns and needs when I read the Word in my mother tongue. I praise God, who has given me the physical and emotional strength to work in translation.
