SOME -- So Others Might Eat

SOME restores hope and dignity to the homeless through comprehensive services, including meals (1,000 served daily), medical care, addiction treatment, job training and over 250 units of permanent affordable housing. 202-797-8806.

Why do we exist?

SOME stands for So Others Might Eat and our name only begins to tell our story. Founded in 1970 by a group of priests and ministers, SOME began as a "soup kitchen". We are an interfaith organization, made up of community-based volunteers and staff. We are Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Sikh, Moslem, and Hindu. We are volunteers from offices or business who believe serving the poor is everyone's job.

SOME, with the help of volunteers continues the mission of providing 1,200 meals a day to hungry and homeless children, men and women. In addition to the meals, SOME also offers clothing, shelter, showers, and medical and dental care at the "Main SOME". We offer much more - SOME has 20 other places throughout the City with programs that address the causes of homelessness and poverty. Those programs focus on Jobs, Affordable Housing, Mental Illness and Drug Addiction. SOME also has special programs which outreach to Senior Citizens.

SOME is a non-profit community based organization which provides all these services in a caring, dignified manner meant to help restore dignity and respect to those we are privileged to serve. All of our services are delivered in a spirit of compassion, with the belief that justice begins when we show hospitality to anyone in need who comes our way. Our goal is never to pass judgment, but to nourish, to support and, when need be, even to challenge and to encourage.

What have you accomplished?

SOME (So Others Might Eat) was founded 28 years ago to serve the hungry and homeless of Washington. Begun as a soup kitchen, SOME has evolved into a multi-faceted organization whose mission is two-fold: first, to meet people's basic needs, and second, to help them overcome what keeps them homeless and destitute.

SOME offers basic services, such as meals (over 1,200 served daily), hot showers and clean clothing, and comprehensive medical and dental care.

SOME runs many programs that deal with the root causes of homelessness and empower people to overcome what keeps them trapped in the cycle of poverty. They include:     a.. Three 90-day residential employment programs (Joshua House, Mickey Leland Place, and Harvest House)

b.. Therapeutic day center for the mentally ill (Isaiah House)

c.. Counseling and case management for alcohol and drug addictions (SOME Social Service Addictions Program)

d.. Permanent, affordable housing for 225 formerly homeless people (Shalom House, Jeremiah House, Anna Cooper House, Thea Bowman House, and SOME Townhouses)

e.. Two inpatient drug treatment facilities for homeless men and women in West Virginia (Exodus House and Maya Angelou House)

f.. Two day centers for low-income senior citizens providing activities in a social setting (Dwelling Place Senior Center and Shalom House Senior Center)

g.. Care for financially, physically, and mentally abused elderly in a seven bed shelter (Dwelling Place Abused Elderly Shelter)

h.. Community organizing focused on empowering Southeast Washington residents (SOME Southeast Center)

i.. Job training to move people permanently from homelessness and poverty (SOME Center for Employment Training (SOME CET) ) opened in June 1998 All of these programs are designed to meet the needs of individuals to move from the streets and shelters to self-sufficient, independent lives.

How do you help people in my community? Why do you need my support?
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it? Can I Volunteer? How?
