Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties

Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties ensures broad public access to reproductive healthcare through direct service, education and advocacy. 19 centers offering a full range of birth control.

Why do we exist?

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) was founded by Margaret Sanger - the pioneer of the birth control movement - in 1916.   Planned Parenthood of San Diego & Riverside Counties (PPSDRC) has been an affiliate of PPFA for more than 40 years.  PPSDRC provides family planning services to a three-county area, serving the 4.5 million residents of San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial Counties.  Since its establishment in 1963, PPSDRC has grown to be the second largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the nation, providing direct medical services to over 210,000 patients annually with educational programs serving another 50,000 residents of various age groups and ethnicities.

There is a high unmet need for family planning services in our region.  Many of our patients refer to Planned Parenthood not only as their reproductive provider, but as their primary healthcare provider.  We provide services to anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. Over 60% of area residents who are eligible for subsidized family planning services are still not receiving care.

Reproductive services provided by PPSDRC include: all FDA-approved forms of contraception; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs); testing and counseling referrals for HIV/AIDS; female and male sterilization; mid-life services; colposcopies; pap smears; breast exams; and both surgical and medication abortion services.  Education services provided include 3 programs that include mentoring & community service components (one for boys in grades 5 & 6, one for girls in grades 5 and 6, and one co-ed class for 7th graders).  We also offer parent & teacher trainings, peer-to-peer education for teens and adults living in migrant communities in the Coachella Valley, Riverside County & in the border region of Mexico.

The mission of PPSDRC is to provide comprehensive reproductive and complementary health care services in settings that preserve and protect the essential privacy and rights of each individual; to advocate public policies that guarantee these rights and ensure access to such services; and to provide educational programs that enhance the understanding of individual and social implications of reproductive choices.  For over 40 years, PPSDRC has provided broad public access to reproductive medical services, education and advocacy, assuring quality, affordability and confidentiality with a multi-lingual and culturally sensitive staff.

What have you accomplished?

Our patients are diverse in their incomes, ethnicities, and where they live.  PPSDRC serves the college student without an income who needs a birth control method; the single mother living in the outskirts of Coachella Valley who needs a ride to the clinic from a Spanish-speaking staff member for her annual exam; the 5th grade boy who needs a older-peer mentor with whom he can speak openly with about the challenges of adolescence.  We serve people of all ages who need testing & treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections, we screen women for cervical cancer, we talk to women and men about which birth control methods are best for them – and we do it all through a non-discriminatory, culturally-sensitive model.

Our patients think highly of the services we provide. Patient Satisfaction Survey results reveal that 99% of our patients surveyed indicated that the services we provided were either very good or excellent, and that they would turn to PPSDRC again.
