We assess, collect and distribute mandatory (ZAKAT) and voluntary (SADAQA) Islamic charity primarily to assist the poor and needy in America and seek to help them attain self-sufficiency.
Why do we exist?
We exist because, although there are many Muslim organizations helping the poor and needy abroad, we are the only national Muslim organization focusing on the poor and needy in the United States and charity begins at home. We are helping many poor and needy people avoid homelessness and to deal with various emergencies and our social service program is helping them to find long-term solutions to their chronic problems.
What have you accomplished?
We spent over $78,000 on our charitable programs in the last fiscal year to help needy American families to meet various needs, especially to avoid homelessness. In addition we continued to support three Palestinian children and to spend moneys specifically designated for interfaith work in improving religious understanding. Disbursements totaling $56,540 were made to over 200 different poor or needy families for fuel, shelter, clothing, debt reduction and emergency transportation. The rest was spent for referral and counseling to help people to achieve self-sufficiency.
