Supports and enhances the DC Public Libraries by providing critical programs, services, materials and equipment not otherwise available to the library with special emphasis on children, literacy and technology.
Why do we exist?
The District of Columbia Public Library Foundation is a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation working exclusively for the betterment of the District of Columbia Public Library. While recognizing the need for continued and increased government support for the Library, the Foundation is a catalyst for attracting private organizations and foundations to enhance and augment essential Library services.
Libraries are one of the last public domains where anyone can access information and resources free of charge.
What have you accomplished?
The Foundation helps almost 20,000 children and teens each year maintain and improve their reading skills through two summer reading programs at the library. As a result, children perform better in school and increase their chances for success. Without the Foundation, these programs wouldn’t happen.
The Foundation supports a number of library programs including the Enhanced Business Information Center, Reading King, Center for the Book, Taking Poetry to the Street, DC We Read, Mike Fox GED Scholarship Fund, Renovation of R.L. Christian Branch Library, Deaf Awareness Day, and the enhancement of the children’s collection, Jewish history collection, and poetry collection.
