Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Save the Bay! We're committed to reducing pollution, improving fisheries, protecting and restoring natural resources, and building an environmental ethic in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Why do we exist?

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is the largest and only independent Bay-wide organization that exists solely to restore the vitality of the Chesapeake Bay, North America’s largest estuary.

The Bay and its tributaries are extremely important to our members and the general public for health, economic, and recreational reasons.  We fulfill our purposes through education, research, grassroots empowerment, resource protection and land conservancy programs.

What have you accomplished?

  • CBF has instigated oyster growing workshops and gardens to stock underwater reefs in order to rejuvenate the entire oyster population while helping to filter the water.

  • New electronic advocacy initiatives will make it possible for thousands of volunteers to contact their local government officials in order to express their opinions concerning current environmental issues.

  • Our Lands At Risk Project is currently identifying and educating citizens of the immediate areas around our major cities that are targeted for development, at-risk of losing farmland, wetlands and forest-lined streams.

  • CBF’s partnership with Ducks Unlimited continues to save hundreds of acres of wetlands for migratory birds.

  • CBF continues to advocate for the opening of rivers and streams which allow spawning populations of shad and herring to migrate into historically significant waters.

  • CBF’s groundbreaking Capital Campaign has recently been announced publicly and our efforts to raise $44 million to ensure the increased health of the Bay and its natural resources is more than half way toward completion.

  • Our Student BaySavers Initiative is now helping thousands of students and young adults continue to stay involved in environmental activities.

  • CBF has recently expanded our middle school curriculum into the State of Virginia.

How do you help people in my community? Why do you need my support?
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it? Can I Volunteer? How?
