Bright Beginnings is a child and family development center that provides free childcare, education, therapeutic and family services to homeless families in the District.
Why do we exist?
Bright Beginnings opened in 1991 after an extensive community needs assessment illustrated a critical need for childcare among homeless families in Washington, DC. Bright Beginnings is a free, full-day, year-round child and family development center dedicated to homeless infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families living in the District of Columbia. The mission of Bright Beginnings is to (1) provide infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with a safe, nurturing, educational environment, (2) prepare the children to enter kindergarten ready to learn, and (3) support parents as they stabilize their home lives.
On any given day, over 800 children are homeless in Washington, DC under the age of five. Bright Beginnings cares for over 185 of those children annually and continues to expand to serve more homeless children in need. Bright Beginnings provide the educational, health, therapeutic and families services needed to support our families to a brighter future.
What have you accomplished?
For 16 years, Bright Beginnings has helped over 1,500 children in need and helped them to grow and develop in strong and intelligent children by providing both day and evening child care services. We rely heavily on individual contributions to meet the special needs of our families – like Leila and her two children.
Leila was a single, 18 year-old mother struggling to take care of her two children while living at a local DC shelter. In August of 2003, Leila discovered Bright Beginnings through her caseworker and enrolled her children in the programs. Immediately, Bright Beginnings’ social worker made sure Leila and her children’s most urgent needs were met, including some new clothes, diapers, and metro tokens. Not only did Leila feel cared for, but her children were receiving the support they needed. Thanks to the health screenings done within 45 days of enrollment, a hearing problem was detected in Leila’s son, Matthew. With support and referrals from Bright Beginnings’ social workers and therapeutic team, Matthew was able to receive appropriate medical care, and Leila learned how to be responsible for her son’s hearing needs.
While Leila’s children were being cared for, Leila had the opportunity to pursue a career. Through volunteering at Bright Beginnings and participating in parenting workshops, Leila realized she had a passion for working with children. With the help of her social worker, she enrolled in a Child Development Associate (CDA) certificate program and began working as a Parent Aid at Bright Beginnings. With encouragement from Bright Beginnings, Leila was able to complete her course work and work experience, and received her CDA. “I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for this wonderful place. Whenever I felt like giving up, there was always someone to talk to and never ending compassion.”
Today, Leila has one child at Bright Beginnings and one in a local elementary school. Leila works as a teacher at a child care program, and is on her way to self-sufficiency. That is what Bright Beginnings is all about – educating and caring for young children while helping homeless parents rebuild their lives.
