Anacostia Watershed Society

Working towards a swimable and fishable Anacostia River by providing volunteer restoration opportunities, advocating for environmental justice in our neighborhoods and engaging students of all ages in environmental education programs.

Why do we exist?

AWS works with community leaders for environmental justice in the Anacostia neighborhoods near the river. We sponsor river and community cleanup / fix-ups, tree plantings and other volunteer action projects available to local residents.

What have you accomplished?

The society has worked with local community leaders to protect the Anacostia community from four large intrusive development projects. AWS organizes and supports self-help neighborhood improvements projects that also help restore the Anacostia river.
