AFAR is solely dedicated to awarding scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. institutions who are studying age-related diseases, utilizing cutting-edge technology.
How do you help people in my community?
Aging research helps everyone! Consider that some of our ancestors perished from diseases for which we now have cures. Visionary scientists like the ones whose research is funded by the American Foundation for Aging Research developed those cures. Students in your communities or your family members and friends may apply for scholarships and fellowships through the Foundation. In our difficult economy more and more students will need funding to attend college. The scientists to whom we grant fellowships are amongst the best and brightest in the country. Matthew J. Allen, recently awarded a fellowship, is studying Alzheimer’s disease at Northwestern University in Illinois. In a recommendation letter, one of Matt’s former professors from the California Institute of Technology wrote: “Matt is by far the strongest student that I have had the pleasure of working with in my 22 years as a professor.”
Why do you need my support?
We have all seen aging friends and family members suffer from illnesses and diseases. Aging research helps alleviate suffering and gives up hope for our future. The American Foundation for Aging Research is almost entirely funded by individual donations. Some corporate support is received. However, the Foundation does not receive federal or state support. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and used wisely.
How can I be sure that you will use my money wisely and won't waste it?
The American Foundation for Aging Research has only one, part-time paid employee. The Foundation is not affiliated with North Carolina State University but receives some accounting, administrative and office space from the University at no cost. Recipients of the newsletter receive a financial statement and copy of the Foundation’s yearly tax return to ensure that money is being distributed properly. Upon request, we would be happy to supply donors who do not receive the newsletter with a copy of our tax return.
Can I Volunteer? How?
You can volunteer by asking friends and family who are interested in aging research if they would like to receive our newsletter. You can also help by letting local students know that scholarships are available from the American Foundation for Aging Research.
